Interview by Beth Fuchs, CPO
Q. What did you think and how did you feel when you learned that you won this award?
I was so surprised. I felt flattered and humbled. And a little nervous standing up on the stage with Amy speaking about me.
Q. Tell us the story of your NAPO involvement. What has been most rewarding?
My involvement with NAPO volunteering began about a year into my membership with the NAPO-Austin chapter. I served as Membership and Marketing Director, GO Month Chair, and President. While still on my chapter board, I began serving on the NAPO National Marketing and Membership committees. Eventually, I became chair of the Membership committee. I have found all these positions rewarding, but my favorite has been in my Membership roles. I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know so many other organizers from all over. I like helping with member engagement and facilitating member connections.
Q. How does your passion for education show up in your work?
My passion for education shows up through the chance to transfer essential organizing skills to my clients, groups I speak to, and classes I teach. I love sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm about organizing in all kinds of situations. I also get to share with others about the many ways I have learned and grown my skills as an organizer not only through my experiences but through the classes from NAPO U, the Free Member Webinars, the Podcast, the Book Club, the blog, POINT community discussions, speakers at chapter meetings, and connecting with other organizers and productivity experts.
Q. How has volunteering helped to build and grow you and/or your business?
Being able to share with my clients and potential clients about my volunteering with NAPO has helped my business. I know it shows them my commitment to my industry; they have always admired that, and it gives them more confidence in my skills. I have also built my business and leadership skills by volunteering. Volunteering has allowed me to work with colleagues and build great relationships.
Q. Where have you found support within NAPO? Where has support found you?
NAPO and NAPO members have given me so much support. I have built wonderful friendships through volunteering. I know people through the leadership training NAPO provides, through the chapter position calls that the CRC does, from working together on committees, and meeting so many people at NAPO Conferences. I know all kinds of organizers I can refer business to and have been referred by. I have relationships with members where we support each other with accountability and a place to bounce ideas. And I know that so many of my friends in NAPO are there for me when I need advice and help.
Q. What volunteer advice would you give to both new and veteran NAPO members?
My advice to other members is to “Just Do It!” Volunteering is a fantastic way to network, make meaningful connections, develop new skills, sharpen old skills, boost your visibility, build self-confidence, make new friends, and make a difference for NAPO and the organizing industry. Plus, it feels good and is fun! I have indeed “drunk the Kool-Aid,” but I wouldn’t say these things if I hadn’t experienced it myself.
