With the approaching holiday season, it’s important to have your client’s look at what they have and get rid of the things they no longer use. While this may be a challenging task, it’s important to make room for the new. There are three spaces that we suggest purging before the holidays: the kid’s room, the kitchen and the primary bedroom. To conquer clutter during the holiday season, follow our tips on how to purge.
The Kid’s Room
The first step is dividing time between toys and clothing. It’s important to have your client explain to their child that it’s time to make way for new toys. If the kids are old enough to participate, our favorite tip to include them is give them the choice between two toys. This positions it like they are in control of what goes and what stays. Have your client do the same thing if they have a toy room and dispose of toys that are broken and donate toys that are gently used.
For clothing, have your client sort by anything their kids may have outgrown through the years, anything torn or damaged, and clothes they no longer wear. The next step is to throw away the clothes that cannot be repaired and donate gently worn clothing to their local donation center.
The Kitchen
This may be the most intimidating of the three spaces, but it’s the most beneficial space to tackle before holiday cooking begins. Your client should start by going through their pantry and refrigerator and throwing away any expired foods. If they have food items in their pantry they know they won’t use before they expire, have them donate it to a local food bank. The next steps should be setting up their kitchen to its maximum potential. Strategically placing utensils where they make the most sense is key to quick and easy cooking and baking.
The Primary Bedroom
Purging the closet is the perfect time for your client to create a wish list for their loved ones. Encourage them to get rid of items they no longer wear, don’t fit, or are damaged beyond repair. Ensure they throw away the clothes that are damaged and donate the clothes that are gently worn to their local donation center.
Bonus tip! Have your client hang their hanger’s backwards. However often they want, they can see what they have worn and what they haven’t to easily purge unworn clothing.
